I have to say OnGrid's track day last weekend was definitely the most fun event I've ever shot at. Since I haven't been shooting after lunch for the past several events, I decided I'd finally stop buying camera gear and find a car to take to the track.
After poking around on the internet for a month or so I settled on a stock NB Miata; a salvage-title 10th Anniversary Edition. The only complaints I have about the car are the drift-life neon green wheels (that were plasti-dipped black when I picked the car up...ricers...) and the front bumper not aligning properly with the headlights. Other than that the Mazda has been an extremely good purchase; Sara and I made an 800-mile road trip in the car on our way to the track.
Since I was shooting most of the day I only went out for two sessions and as it was my first-ever track day I didn't have any expectations. I was happy to see that I scraped a 1:37.9 with 240 treadwear tires on the West course though, especially considering the only thing that's been done to the car is an upgraded front sway bar. I was definitely helped by some fresh rubber from Zestino Tyre and a very proper alignment from Trackspec Autosports right before the track day. The Miata seemed to never run out of grip with this setup but judging how the tires looked after my two sessions there is a lot more room to push. I'm excited to come back in April so I can try to take a few seconds off my time.
Getting on the track for the first time wasn't the only rad thing about the day though; it's always nice to catch up with everyone who comes out to OnGrid's events. Cody Wilbur got this shot of me driving and all of the shots in the preview albums with the 'W' prefix were taken by him (I will edit and send any that you purchase from either of us). My dude Steve (@dooglestudios) also came up and they took turns shooting with me out on the track.
There were also some dogs scampering around the paddock, which is always a good time. And keep an eye out on the Trackspec blog for Victoria's post from the event — all of their guys set new PBs so some in-car footage is on the way.
Jon made it into the 1:26s in his MK6 and they weren't the only ones I heard talking about personal bests. After the track dried up conditions were great and lots of folks beat their old track records last Saturday; I've been seeing videos pop up on Facebook groups all week.
Some NSXs also made an appearance for rolling shots on the track. This is something we always offer at OnGrid's Thunderhill track days so feel free to contact me if you want some shots like these. We only have time for a few people each event though so get in touch and buy your spot early.
With the soft light from the overcast day I was stoked to edit these photos; I recently shot Tony's NSX and it was nice to get these to complete the set.
My dad also showed up at the track for the first time to see what it was all about. Sina took him out and he had a great time on his first ride-along. I'm going to try to trick him into tracking his Mazda 3, but I'm not sure he'll be persuaded.
On another positive note, with all the rain we've been getting Thunderhill was full of flowers and tall grass. A trend that, unfortunately, I doubt will last too long. I very much prefer to shoot here when it's green and grassy instead of brown and dead. Oh well.
Other than that, it was a pretty standard track day with OnGrid. Hanging out at the track surrounded by rad cars and good friends is never a bad day.
It's also been cool to watch the progression of some regular drivers' builds; Aaron's IS300 has come a long way since I first met him a few years back. I will have to resist the temptation to start improving my little NB too much, at least until I graduate. But it's nice to have so much inspiration around the paddock.
Like I said, all of the photos on this page have been edited. The previews below are not, but this is what you can expect if you pick up some photos. Follow the instructions below. Thank you to all of the drivers for coming out, celebrating Sina's birthday, and supporting my work.
